for everyone
Established in 1900, my home village of Arden is one of the few remaining Utopian communities formed in a nationwide flurry of such projects during the end of the 19th century. With a bow to William Shakespeare (Arden is the forest in the play "As You Like It," and "Thou Art Welcome Hither" is a line from "King Lear"), the village is based on the economic principles of Henry George, and the Arts and Crafts movement of England's Robert Morris. George believed that governments should not tax the income of workers, but should collect taxes only from owners of land (the means of production) according to how much was owned. All land would be taxed at the same rate, whether improved or not. That idea had little impact in George's lifetime (1839-1897). Today, however, several cities have used Georgist concepts to effect urban renewal. The founding concepts of Arden also have bloomed into the founding of neighboring Georgist villages Ardentown (1922) and Ardencroft (1950). Residents do not own land, which is held in trust by the community. (This allowed leaders to evict a resident who turned an historic building into a bordello!) Trustees "rent" land to residents, who pay town taxes according to how much land they occupy. Arden became incorporated in 1967; Ardentown in 1975. Land rents still pay for all town expenses.
